Breast Cancer – Fit for the Cure
One in eight women in the U.S. will develop breast cancer during their lifetime, with approximately 42,000 expected to die each year from breast cancer. Those are scary numbers!
Whether it is you going through breast cancer yourself or someone close to you, going through breast cancer is a difficult experience that no one should have to go through alone. That is why it is important that we work on not only finding a cure for cancer but also provide support for those who are currently dealing with it.
Thankfully there are great charities that are doing this incredible work:
- Researching the condition to look for possible ways to cure or decrease the chances of developing it.
- Making sure there is someone to talk to for those who need the support.
- Providing valuable information on how to check for the signs of breast cancer to help increase the number who can get a diagnosis early, which drastically increases their chances of survival.
- Supporting those facing financial difficulties getting through the treatment with more options.
Introducing Susan G. Komen®
Susan G. Komen® was founded in the 80s when Nancy G. Brinker promised her sister, Susan, that she would fight to end breast cancer forever. This is when Susan G. Komen had lost her three-year battle with breast cancer at the young age of just 36!
Since those early days, Susan G. Komen® has grown to become the world’s largest non-profit source of funding for the important fight against breast cancer. They now run worldwide fundraising events, bringing together people from all backgrounds to raise money to help move forwards the fight.
How is Susan G. Komen® helping?
Susan G. Komen® provides support for those who are currently dealing with breast cancer in their lives, funding research into curing breast cancer and supporting those undergoing treatment with the financial burden that comes with breast cancer.
Trying to summarise the work Susan G. Komen® does will never do it justice, so we suggest that you read more about their work on the Susan G. Komen® website. There is even an in-depth description of the heart-wrenching experience that caused for Susan G. Komen® to be founded.
One of the things that really struck us about the work that Susan G. Komen® carries out is that they have ensured that 80% of all the money donated is used towards supporting those affected by breast cancer by keeping their running costs low. This is something that a surprisingly large number of charities don’t expose, and if they do, the percentage tends to be lower. You can find out more in their financial reports.

What are Empress Waist doing?
It’s all well and good hearing from us about how the fight against cancer is essential, and it is a worthy cause to donate to, but what are we doing about it?
To support Susan G. Komen® in the vital work that they are carrying out, Empress Waist will be donating 10% of our profits during Breast Cancer Awareness month 2020.
We hope to make donating to worthy causes a regular part of our ongoing ethos at Empress Waist, and we hope you will join us in donating to Susan G. Komen® yourselves.
